HOPKINS, Minn. - A Star Tribune truck driver unwittingly became part of the news after a mishap on a busy west metro freeway Monday.

Hopkins Police Sergeant Mike Glassberg says the delivery truck was northbound on 169 near Excelsior Boulevard around 6 a.m. when an unidentified truck dropped a skid loader bucket onto the freeway. Glassberg says the Star Tribune driver was unable to avoid the bucket and struck it, causing his steering to fail.

The truck flipped and landed in the northbound ditch, causing minor injuries to the driver, who was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center. Another vehicle also struck the bucket, but the driver of that vehicle was not injured.

The exit to Excelsior Boulevard was closed while the Star Tribune truck was righted and the scene cleaned up. Traffic backed up due to emergency responders and responding tow rigs.

Police say the driver of the unidentified truck did not return back to the scene to pick up the bucket . Anyone who witnessed the sequence of events is asked to call Hopkins Police at 952-938-8885.
