Highway 19 in Russell County open after crash, fuel spill
A crash late Wednesday just before midnight ended
with a fuel spill and forced emergency crews to close part of Highway 19
in Russell County.
Emergency Management Coordinator Jess Powers told News 5 WCYB a truck hit the guard rail between Pratt Drive and the Hillbilly Market on the northbound side of Highway 19, north of Lebanon.
That caused the truck’s gasoline tank to rupture, and the truck – which had just been filled -- lost all 30 gallons of gasoline onto the roadway. Authorities estimated approximately 10 gallons went into a nearby tributary of Elk Garden Creek.
Both northbound lanes of Highway 19 were closed until the accident scene and gasoline were cleared from both the roadway and the waterway. The northbound lanes of Highway 19 reopened at about 3:20 am.
They said the vehicle appeared to be totaled and the guardrail will need to be replaced.
