Homewood, Alabama cleans up after gas leak contained, several trees down due to storm

Posted: July 10, 2015 HOMEWOOD, AL (WBRC) -

A gas leak has been contained in the 900 block of Saulter Road in Homewood.
This comes after an intense thunderstorm moved through the area in the 4 p.m. hour.

Ashley Wells said the storm came out of nowhere.

"It was scary for a minute, it really was," said Wells. "I'm really surprised at all the damage and all the trees down. I really didn't think it was that bad. It sounded bad, it's never as bad as you think it's going to be but it's pretty bad out here."

The same storm toppled several trees causing damage to power lines and homes along Saulter Road and several other areas.

On Oglesby and Dixon avenues, a tree came down on a house but fortunately no one was hurt. The homeowner was there at the time.

Gus Jelks lives across the street and was home when the storm rolled through.
"I was just working from home in my kitchen, and then the sunlight all of a sudden turned to gray and then a lot of lightning and thunder. The power went off, next thing you know you go outside and there’s a tree down," said Jelks.

On Broadway Street, a young family narrowly missed serious injury when a tree fell on their car as they drove home.
There have been no reported injuries from officials.
