Three men working on U.S. Highway 27 in south Lake County
were killed after a two-car crash sent one of the vehicles into the shoulder,
hitting all three victims Thursday afternoon.
The victims, all utility workers from Georgia, were doing
work on the southbound side of U.S.
27 near Cagan Crossings, south of Clermont, when the crash happened around
1:45 p.m.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 92-year-old Ira
Caldwell Jr., of Davenport, was making a right turn onto southbound U.S. 27,
when he pulled into the path of 20-year-old Alexandra Schultz, of Clermont.
Troopers said Caldwell struck the side of Schultz's car,
sending it into the shoulder where the three men were working.
All three workers were pronounced dead at the scene, troopers
said. Their names were not immediately released.
The crash remains under investigation, and FHP said charges
were pending.
As we have said many times, old people should be strictly scrutinized regarding their vision, mental and physical abilities to drive, and, if possible, should not be allowed to drive. They are causing too many deadly and non-deadly accidents, slowing traffic, impeding traffic and so on.
