THE DEADLY US ROADS: 3 DEAD, 1 CRITICAL AFTER FIERY HEAD-ON COLLISION WEST OF MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA

MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol on Sunday identified the occupants of one of the vehicles involved in a fiery head-on collision that killed three people west of Muskogee on Saturday afternoon.

Christina Biggs, 42, was driving east on Oklahoma 16 about 3.7 miles west of Muskogee just after 4:45 p.m. Saturday while another vehicle, which OHP Capt. Paul Timmons said was a Chevrolet Avalanche, was traveling west on the same highway. The driver of the Avalanche, who was not identified Sunday, drove left of the center line “for unknown reasons” and crashed head-on into Biggs’ vehicle, which Timmons said was a Mercedes sport utility vehicle.

The two vehicles then caught fire on the roadway, according to an OHP crash report.

Biggs was flown to a Tulsa hospital in critical condition, and her passenger, 24-year-old Ashley Biggs, died at a Muskogee hospital, the report states. The driver and passenger of the Avalanche died at the scene, Timmons said.

Troopers said both women in the Mercedes were wearing seat belts but that they were still investigating whether the people in the Avalanche wore them at the time of the crash. OHP Lt. John Vincent said Sunday afternoon that neither occupant of the Avalanche has been positively identified due to the nature of the crash scene, and officials would likely have to resort to dental records to do so.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, troopers said. OHP released the collision scene to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation late Saturday but said the stretch of highway would remain closed overnight due to damage the crash caused to the roadway.

Troopers said the road has since been reopened as of Sunday afternoon.
