The cause of a huge woods fire that burned around 500 acres
in Brunswick County earlier this month has been ruled "undetermined,"
according to NC Forest Service officials.
The fire started in the afternoon hours of Monday, April 6
near the Compass Pointe subdivision off of Hwy 74/76 and prompted evacuations
of the Barrington neighborhood and Heirloom Drive area near Mount Misery Road,
in addition to Butler Road.
The fire quickly spread, but was eventually contained by emergency
crews.
Officials say at least three homes were damaged in the
blaze. The American Red Cross offered assistance to at least one family after
their house was damaged.
North Brunswick High School was temporarily opened as
shelter for those evacuating.

Evacuation orders have been lifted for neighborhoods
surrounding a large woods fire, according to Brunswick County Fire Marshal
Scott Garner.
The fire near the Compass Pointe subdivision off of Hwy
74/76 prompted evacuations of the Barrington neighborhood and Heirloom Drive
area, in addition to Butler Road, Monday afternoon.
Garner said around 6 p.m. the evacuation was lifted.
A shelter was opened at North Brunswick High School for
evacuees.
Officials with the N.C. Forestry Service tell us the fire
swept through about 500 acres.
The cause of the fire is unknown, but fire officials said it
was not a controlled burn.
The American Red Cross says they helped at least one family
find somewhere to stay after their home was damaged Monday.
Fire officials were still on scene early Tuesday morning
watching for hot spots and trying to figure out what sparked the flames.
