THREE WRECKERS CALLED IN TO LIFT LOADED SEMI-TRAILER TRUCK AFTER TIP-OVER ACCIDENT INVOLVING A SEMI CARRYING A FULL LOAD OF SEED POTATOES
February 4, 2015
BAINBRIDGE, GEORGIA
Three large tow trucks were called in after a semi-trailer
truck with a full load of farm products turned over off U.S. 27 near Bainbridge
on Wednesday afternoon.
The accident happened shortly after 3 p.m. at the
intersection of U.S. 27 North and Brinson-Airbase Road, a couple of miles north
of the Decatur County Airport.
According to Decatur County Fire and Rescue, the driver of
the semi-trailer truck was carrying a load of seed potatoes bound for Vanco
Farms, a Canadian company which grows potatoes locally.
The semi’s driver was attempting to turn left off U.S. 27
onto Brinson-Airbase Road and apparently took the turn too wide, Fire and
Rescue Chief Charlie McCann said.
Firefighters removed the windshield to free the driver and
her 8-year-old son, who had been riding in the truck’s sleeper compartment.
Both were taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital in Bainbridge for treatment
of non-life-threatening injuries.
Fire and Rescue, Decatur County Sheriff’s deputies and a
Georgia State Patrol trooper were standing by until tow trucks from Royce’s in
Cairo, Ga., could turn the truck back upright. Because it was carrying a full load, the semi
truck was too heavy to be pulled up by the winches attached to the two trucks,
so a third tow truck was being called in at about 4:30 p.m.
