NORFOLK,
Va. (WAVY) — The northbound lanes of Tidewater Drive have reopened after
a fatal auto-pedestrian accident Wednesday morning.
Norfolk
police say they received a report of an accident with injuries along
Tidewater Drive, near the intersection of Norview, around 5:23 a.m.
Norfolk police
say 62-year-old Gary W. Bess Sr. of the 5600 block of Tidewater
Drive was crossing Tidewater Drive along the pedestrian
crosswalk when he was struck by a Chevrolet pickup truck. Police said the truck
was traveling northbound in the 3600 block of Tidewater Drive,
through a green light, when the truck struck Bess Sr.
Bess Sr.
was transported to the hospital where he later died. Police say the driver
remained on scene.
According
to a city spokeswoman, the director of public works, safety engineer and
traffic engineer met Wednesday to talk about this intersection because of this
crash. Spokeswoman Lori Crouch said the city officials are aware it’s an issue
and that improvements were made previously but more fact-gathering needs
to be done. From Jan. 1, 2010 to Feb. 3, 2015, 18 car crashes have
been reported, which can include wrecks with and without injuries.

A silver
pickup truck with a dented hood and a walker could be seen on the scene.
Police say
the results of the investigation will be turned over to the Commonwealth’s
Attorney Office for review and consideration for charges.
The
northbound lanes of Tidewater Drive, between Norview and Willow Wood, were
closed for almost three hours while police investigated.
