LA MESA, CALIFORNIA
Hazardous materials crews finished cleaning up an diesel
spill after a big rig sideswiped a fire hydrant in La Mesa Tuesday
morning, La Mesa police said.
The big rig driver had just finished a delivery at a
7-Eleven and was pulling out of the parking lot just before 8 p.m. Monday when
he hit the hydrant . The impact tore a hole in the truck’s side fuel
tank.
Between 60 and 80 gallons of diesel fuel spilled and ran
down Amaya Drive, police said. Firefighters were able to slow the flow of
fuel with absorbent barriers, but not before several gallons spilled into
a storm drain.
Hazardous materials crews from the San Diego Fire-Rescue
Department and San Diego County took part in the cleanup. Traffic was closed
between Howell Drive and Severin Drive on Amaya Drive until around 2:30 a.m.
