2 DEAD WHEN THEY REAR-ENDED A LOG TRUCK IN POLK COUNTY, TEXAS. HIGH SPEED AND LOW VISIBILITY WERE THE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS

FEBRUARY 24, 2015

POLK COUNTY, TEXAS (KYTX)

Two people are dead in a Polk County crash, after their vehicle struck a log truck that was hitched to a tow truck on the side of the highway.

Polk County DPS Troopers report on February 24, 2015 at 5:39 AM, troopers responded to the scene of a two vehicle crash on the southbound side of US 59 approximately one mile north of Livingston.

With the information available at this time initial reports indicate that the driver of a 1989 Peterbilt towing a 1988 Nabors pole trailer transporting logs was disabled in the outside southbound lane of US 59.

The driver reportedly exited the vehicle in an attempt to warn oncoming traffic of the disabled vehicle. A 2012 Dodge Caravan was also southbound on US 59 and struck the back of the log trucks towed unit.

The two occupants that were traveling in the Dodge Caravan were pronounced deceased at the scene by Polk County Justice of the Peace Larry Whitworth.

The identities of the deceased are not being released at this time pending notification of their next of kin.

Both southbound lanes are currently closed at this time and TxDOT officials are on the scene assisting with traffic control.  No further information is available at this time.

The truck did not appear to have proper reflective lights to warn other vehicles of its presence.  From the severity of the crash, it appears that speed was also a factor in this tragic accident.

The deceased driver has been identified as Susie Anna Granger, 45, of Lufkin. The passenger was identified as Shuna Latrice Carter, 41, of Nacogdoches.

Both southbound lanes are currently closed at this time and TxDOT officials are on the scene assisting with traffic control.

The crash remains under investigation.
