DRUNK OR DRUGGIES IN CHICAGO? NO WAY: 3 INJURED WHEN CAR SLAMS INTO SOUTH ELGIN HOUSE, ENTERS THE FIRST FLOOR AND LANDS IN BASEMENT WHERE RESIDENTS WERE SLEEPING
February 8, 2015
SOUTH ELGIN, ILLINOIS:
A family in northwest suburban South Elgin awoke early
Sunday morning to a car smashing into their home and landing in the basement.
The driver of a car traveling northbound in the 100 block of
South Gilbert Street struck a curb on the west side of the street, lost control
and smashed into the south wall of a two-story gray home around 2:30 a.m.,
according to South Elgin police and fire department officials.
At the time of the accident, a couple and their three
children were asleep inside the home. The wife and the husband were sleeping in
the basement when the car crashed, according to a relative of the family.
No one inside the home was injured, authorities said.
Officials found the man who was driving the car a couple of
blocks away from the scene, said South Elgin Police Department Sgt. Randy
Endean.
The driver, a woman and another man who were inside the car
were taken to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital, said Endean.
Their exact conditions were not immediately known, but the
woman had the worst injuries of the three, said South Elgin Fire Department
Chief Bill Sohn.
At the scene, the home stood with two giant holes on its first floor.
"We’ve had cars hit houses before," Sohn said.
"But not to this extent."
Sohn said the house is "by no means livable" and
said the fire department is working on making the structure safe.
Sohn added that Village of South Elgin officials will have
to inspect the house to determine what to do next.
In the meantime, the family of five who lived in the house
will stay with their relatives in Bartlett, said the family's relative.
No charges were filed as a result of the crash as of Sunday
morning, Endean said.
The accident is still under investigation.
