TWO HORSES AND A DOG DIED IN A NEW ALBANY, OHIO BARN

Two horses and a dog died in
a New Albany barn fire that firefighters battled in single-digit temperatures
early this morning.
Firefighters had to be rotated in and out about every 20 minutes to avoid hypothermia, Plain Township Fire Battalion Chief Greg Ecleberry said.
“It’s difficult to maintain crews for a long time,” Ecleberry said. Even with their turnout gear, they get soaked from all the water used, he said.
The water froze causing a slip-and-fall hazard that sent several firefighters sprawling. A Jefferson Township firefighter who fell was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. No other firefighter injuries were reported.
Plain Township received the call at 3:10 a.m. about the barn fire behind a home at 7869 Peter Hoover Road.
About 30 firefighters from seven departments fought the blaze in the two-story barn.
Ecleberry said arson is not suspected and that investigators will check a heater that was in use in the barn.
He believed the horses were for pleasure riding. One dog escaped the blaze with injuries, a second died in the fire.
