A construction worker was injured Wednesday when the backhoe he was driving tipped over in a Mundelein ravine, authorities said.

The accident happened about 7:30 a.m. on the 1000 block of Lomond Drive. A crew with Copenhaver Construction is there working on a culvert beneath the road as part of a village project.

The worker was using the backhoe to haul another piece of equipment out of the ravine for refueling when it tipped because it was unbalanced, Mundelein Public Safety Director Eric Guenther said.

The worker, a 57-year-old Woodstock resident, was walking around when emergency crews arrived. He was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Some diesel fuel spilled as a result of the accident, but it was cleaned up by firefighters.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident, Guenther said.
