CRAVEN COUNTY, NC (WITN) - A fiery crash this afternoon shut down eastbound lanes of U.S. 70 in Craven County after witnesses say a driver stopped her car in the middle of the highway.

The crash happened around 1:20 p.m. east of the Tuscarora Rhems Road exit. Traffic coming from Kinston to New Bern was shut down.

Two vehicles were involved in the crash with one of those catching fire.

One witness says a woman had stopped her car in the middle of the highway for unknown reasons. He managed to swerve around the stopped car and called 911 to report it.

Another says he saw the pickup truck try to also swerve around the stopped car, but it ended up hitting the car. He said the man was thrown from his truck, which then caught fire. Bystanders helped get the victim away from the burning truck, while his dog jumped out and was okay.

A medical helicopter landed on the highway to take the man to a trauma center.

There's no report on his condition, but witnesses tell us he was talking to them.

The Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
