Explosion reported in Orange County; Colonial Drive closed in area
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -
A fire broke out after an explosion was reported Thursday at an auto salvage company in Orange County, forcing officials to close a major roadway and delaying buses for several area schools.
One person was injured in the fire, which occurred at Eco Green Auto Parts on East Colonial Drive near Chuluota Road. The victim was taken to a hospital with burns, fire officials said.
Colonial Drive remains shut down in both directions, and traffic is backed up for miles in the area.
Orange County Public School said there will likely be delays for buses carrying students several schools, including East River, Timber Creek, University high schools; Avalon, Corner Lake, Discovery, Westridge middle schools; Avalon, Bonneville, Camelot, Castle Creek, Columbia, East Lake, Stone Lakes, Sunrise, Timber Lakes and Waterford elementary schools; and Florida Mall, Project Compass, Simone Youth Academy and Universal alternative and exceptional student education schools.
Firefighters used water and chemicals to get the fire under control. Video from Sky 6 showed the roof of the building melting from the heat of the flames.
Fire officials said they believe debris in the back of the salvage yard somehow caught fire and flames quickly spread to the building.
A Circle K next to the salvage yard was evacuated and pumps were turned off at the gas station.
No other details were immediately known.
