A Metro Public Works employee was killed on the job Tuesday night when he was hit by a a garbage truck.
Police said the man was riding on the back of the truck on Commerce Street around 11 p.m. when the truck got too close to the wall near the Christian Life Center and pinned him.
The driver backed up, most likely to fix his angle, which is when the 19-year-old victim fell.
The driver, who didn't realize he hit his co-worker, then pulled forward and ran him over again, according to police.
"The subject was dislodged from the truck, fallen to the ground. Driver did not know that he had fallen off the truck, so when he continued to back, he ran over the subject," said Metro PD Capt. Jason Starling.
Police are investigating the incident but say there is no reason to believe that this was anything other than a tragic accident.
The victim's name has not been released by officials.
