A 54-year-old man has died and a 26-year-old man has been airlifted to hospital after a small plane crashed into a barn in Cape Breton in Nova Scotia on Saturday.

At about 6:50 p.m., Victoria County RCMP, Emergency Health Services and the Middle River Fire Department received a call that an ultra-light plane had crashed near West Side Middle River Rd. in Middle River, RCMP spokewoman Cpl. Angela Corscadden said.

She said the 54-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene while the 26-year-old man was transported to Halifax by LifeFlight.

Corscadden said a preliminary investigation revealed that the plane contained two male occupants and crashed into a barn shortly after take-off.

The investigation is in its early stages and few details are known at this time regarding the circumstances that led to the crash, she said.

The RCMP is leading the investigation and the Transportation Safety Board has also been notified.
