Man injured when his car hit by train treated and released, ticketed for failure to obey signal in Tolono, Illinois

MAY 19, 2015

TOLONO, ILLINOIS

A Tolono man escaped serious injury when his vehicle was hit by a train about two miles west of Tolono Monday evening.

Champaign County Sheriff's Sgt. Dave Coffey said at 6 p.m, Clifford Branaman, 40, was driving north on County Road 800 E, just north of 600 N, when he failed to yield to a westbound Norfolk Southern train.

The train struck Branaman's sport utility vehicle in the rear passenger side. He was taken for what were described as minor injuries to Carle Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Coffey said Branaman was ticketed for failure to obey a signal indicating an approaching train and for driving under revocation.

Several area fire departments turned out to help with the crash. No one on the train was injured.
