HOUSTON, TEXAS (AP)
The Houston Fire Department says a May 1 house fire that killed three people was caused by an unattended cooking stove.
A family died after a house fire late Friday night in southeast Houston.
The fire started around 10:20 p.m. at the house in the 4800 block of Maggie at Coffee. Firefighters had a difficult time navigating the one-story wood home because of burglar bars, authorities said.
"We had some access problems. The structure had burglar bars throughout the entire house," said Ruy Lozano, senior captain with the Houston Fire Department.
Once they were in, they found three people: a mother, father and a 2-year-old girl. The father, who was trapped inside the home, died at the scene. The mother and daughter died at Memorial Hermann Hospital.
Their identities have not been released.
"I never seen nothing like that before. It was bad," said a neighbor who witnessed the blaze.
The scene remains under investigation.
