SEVILLE, SPAIN
Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy says military plane
crash kills crew, forces closure of Seville airport. Up to 10 crew members were aboard a brand new
Airbus A400M aircraft.
Dramatic images of the crash, which reportedly happened near
the city of Seville, involved a large A400M cargo aircraft. This was a brand new aircraft that was
undergoing flight trials at the airport.
Plumes of black smoke were captured billowing from the
scene.
Early reports suggested as many as ten people could be on
board, although this could not be independently verified.
Seville airport was closed shortly after the incident.
The Airbus 400 military plane, which is also used by the RAF
out of Brize Norton, is a four-engine turboprop transport aircraft.
It is a relatively modern plane, having entered service in
2013.
It typically has a crew of three and can carry up to 37
tonnes of cargo, including tanks and troops.
