JANESVILLE, WIS. (AP)
Roads that were blocked overnight due to a Wisconsin
& Southern Railroad train derailment Monday night are open for now, said Lt. Jim
Holford of the Janesville Police Department.
“Five minutes ago the roads were opened up and the
barricades are off the road,” he said at 5:45 a.m. Tuesday.
But when equipment is brought in to upright the cars and
clean up the grain spill, they will be closed, again, Holford said.
The police department reported a train hauling cars filled
with corn derailed on tracks south of Delavan Drive between Jerome and Putnam
avenues around 9 p.m. Monday.
The department said three cars went off the rails, tipped on
their sides and spilled grain. The derailment blocked Jerome, Putnam and Beloit
avenues, the department wrote in a relase.
No one was injured in the derailment, and the spill isn't
considered hazardous, but cleanup and removal of the train is now expected to
take several hours today, Holford said.
The city barricaded streets in the area, and trucks were not
able to cross train tracks in the area overnight.
South Jackson Drive and Beloit Avenue are open, police said
