170 CUBIC YARDS OF CONCRETE SPILLS INTO OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA CREEK

THURSDAY, APRIL 9, 2015

Crews with the East Bay Municipal Utility District were working on a massive cleanup Thursday after an estimated 170 cubic yards of concrete were accidentally dumped into a creek in the Oakland hills, officials said.

The concrete drained into Glen Echo Creek near Mountain View Cemetery around 11 a.m. Wednesday while utility district subcontractors were back-filling 2 miles of an old 24-inch water pipe that had been replaced during a large project that began last year, said agency spokeswoman Abby Figueroa.

Someone apparently left a valve open at the end of the pipeline, causing the cellular concrete, a foamy type of material, to spill into the creek, which ultimately drains into Lake Merritt.
