CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA
A 46-year-old worker at the construction site of a massive
new Apple campus in Cupertino suffered a fractured right ankle Wednesday when a
crane was lowered on his leg, according to Cal-OSHA.
The man, who was not identified, is an employee of Maxim
Crane Works, according to Cal-OSHA spokeswoman Paola Laverde.
Laverde said the crane operator was lowering the jib-boom at
the end of the day when it struck the man. Construction has not stopped because
of the accident.
The incident was reported at about 2:47 p.m., Laverde said.
Santa Clara County firefighters responded to the
construction site at 19050 Pruneridge Avenue. The man was transported to a
hospital.
The site, which is set to be the company's new headquarters,
is a 2.8-million-square-foot project beside Interstate 280.
Crews broke ground in late 2013; the building is slated to
open in late 2016.
Cal-OSHA, the state's workplace-safety watchdog, said it has
six months to complete its investigation into the injury.
