Police and local law enforcement officials have confirmed a Hudson resident died following an industrial accident at Emerson Hospital on Wednesday, July 18.
According to a press release from Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, Concord Chief of Police Joseph O’Connor and Concord Fire Chief Thomas Judge, the incident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office were notified by Concord police and fire of the fatal incident and the preliminary investigation suggests the victim, a 46-year-old male, died while working in a crawl space on a boiler system at the hospital. This case has been referred to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner who will determine the cause of death.
Law enforcement officials state, this case is an open investigation being conducted by members of the Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, the Concord Police Department and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Emergency officials at the Concord Fire Department responded to Emerson Hospital to administer emergency assistance in conjunction with the staff of Emerson’s Emergency Department.
Ryan’s office stated, “As this death is not considered suspicious no additional information will be released.”
According to Ted Fitzgerald, regional director for public affairs for the U.S. Department of Labor, the office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was notified of an employee fatality at Emerson Hospital in Concord on Wednesday morning. OSHA has opened an inspection to determine whether or not there were any violations of workplace safety standards in connection with this.
He added, “It’s too early to estimate a completion date for the inspection.”
Emerson Hospital Public Relations Manager Leah Lesser referred all media inquires to Ryan’s office, but offered the condolences of the hospital and it’s staff.
“We are extremely saddened by this tragic event,” stated Lesser in an email Thursday afternoon. “We are cooperating fully with the appropriate authorities while this incident is under investigation.”

A Hudson man was killed while working at Emerson Hospital on Wednesday morning, officials said.
Around 11:30 a.m., the 46-year-old man was working in a crawl space on a boiler system at the hospital, which is in Concord, according to the office of Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan.
The Concord Fire Department went to the hospital to offer emergency assistance in conjunction with Emerson's Emergency Department, according to a statement from Ryan's office.
The district attorney's office said the case has been referred to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, which will determine the cause of the man's death.
The death is not considered suspicious and the district attorney did not publicly identify the worker.
An investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office, the Concord Police Department and OSHA.
Ryan's office said it does not expect to release any more information about the incident.
