HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houston police say a sprinkler went off unexpectedly inside an evidence room, and now the police are working to determine how much evidence was potentially impacted. Eyewitness News has learned about 15,000 pieces of evidence will have to be checked for damage, which translates to about 4,200 cases.
HPD is working with the Houston Forensic Science Center. Techs are repackaging some of the evidence.
The District Attorney's Office says they're waiting on HPD to notify them how many pieces of evidence are affected. When that happens, they will immediately notify defense attorneys and prosecutors in the affected cases.
