HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Preliminary figures show that nearly one in five structures on Hilton Head Island suffered some damage when Hurricane Matthew struck the island earlier this month.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head Island reported that about 3,700 structures suffered some damage. Almost 400 of them had substantial damage that amounts to more than half of the assessed value of the building.
Town officials say the numbers are preliminary and a full assessment of every building isn't expected until the end of the week.
There's no immediate breakdown as to how many of the damaged structures are homes and how many are businesses.
