A Charlotte man was killed Sunday evening when he was run over by the same piece of equipment he was using to move tractor trailers from a loading dock at Howell Motor Freight in north Charlotte, said Charlotte Mecklenburg police.
Dexter Leroy Marion, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, 10028 Metromont Industrial Boulevard, said Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.
Marion had been operating a yard hopper, which is a tractor trailer cab used solely to move trailers around a business property. He was in the process of moving trailers from the loading dock shortly after 6:30 p.m. when he got out for a moment and it began to roll away from the dock. Marion was struck by the yard hopper.
An employee of the business called 911 and officers from the North Division of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department were dispatched along with the Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC, officials said.
The accident is being investigated by both police in conjunction with both the North Carolina Department of Labor and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, officials said.
