3 dead, multiple injuries in accident on Long Island Expressway in Shirley

SHIRLEY, Long Island (WABC) -- Three people are dead and a number of others injured after a crash on the westbound Long Island Expressway.
The multi-car accident happened at about 9:35 a.m. Sunday near Exit 68 in Shirley.
Police say a speeding gray Subaru Outback was traveling eastbound on the LIE when the vehicle crossed over the grassy median, went airborne and struck two vehicles, a BMW and Honda that were traveling westbound.
The Subaru had five people inside. There were four people in the BMW and two in the Honda. Three people were pronounced dead at the scene, including the driver of the Subaru. There were two children who were injured, one critically.
Those involved were taken to local hospitals with minor to serious injuries.
The westbound LIE is closed to motorists at Exit 69 and the eastbound roadway is closed at exit 68.
The roadway is expected to be closed until at least 5 p.m.
Detectives are investigating reports the dead driver of the Subaru was traveling at a high rate of speed. He will not do this again.
