HPD officer involved in deady head-on collision in Fort Bend County.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- An off-duty Houston Police officer was injured in a head-on collision that killed a driver in Fort Bend County, and alcohol may have played a role.
The crash happened shortly before 6:30am. Fort Bend County Officials confirm one of the drivers was an off-duty HPD officer.
Investigators at the scene tell us the officer was driving westbound on Beechnut at the same time a Corvette was headed eastbound.
Sources tell Eyewitness News the officer crossed the center line of Beechnut near Oakmoor and into the path of the oncoming Corvette.
The driver of the Corvette was killed when the SUV collided with the Corvette.
The HPD officer was injured and was taken to Katy Memorial Hospital.
The accident caused a great deal of damage to the Corvette, with the driver's side ripped away by the force of the impact.
Meanwhile the SUV was severely damaged as well. The roof of the SUV was pushed down into the drivers side of the vehicle.
The driver of the Corvette has been identified only as a Richmond-area man. His name has not been released until his family can be notified.
Responding deputies reportedly detected the presence of alcohol on the off-duty officer and requested he complete field sobriety tests. He refused to attempt the sobriety tests, so a warrant was obtained and the officer was transported to Memorial Hermann - Katy Hospital for a blood draw, as well as for treatment of minor injuries.
The officer's name is not being released at this time because he has not been charged.
The case remains under investigation.
