ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (WAVY) — Crews in Franklin worked to clean up after several cars on a CSX train derailed at International Paper in Isle of Wight on Tuesday. No one was injured.

Lt. Tommy Potter with the Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office said several cars toppled over onto rail cars on a secondary track.

“This is a large complex here. There are multiple train cars that come through here on a daily basis that service the paper mill,” Potter said.

According to CSX, five well cars derailed on the CSX tracks in front of the mill. Those well cars were carrying 11 intermodal containers with mixed freight, including furniture parts, synthetic rubber and metal. None of the derailed cars had hazardous materials in them.

Deputies with the Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene after receiving reports of a train derailment near the southern end of the county.

“It appears that a piece of the track may have given away, but that is something that, as we go through the day, as we upright these cars, as we begin to remove these cars from the track that we’ll work with the state agencies and CSX to determine that,” Potter said.

Some roads were closed as crews cleared the scene, but all had reopened by Tuesday evening. Contractors were on site to begin rerailing the damaged cars.

CSX is investigating the cause of the accident. International Paper issued the following statement to 10 On Your Side’s Erin Kelly Tuesday afternoon:
