Firefighter from Hoyt, Kansas was killed, another injured in the Line of Duty when the tanker truck he was driving crashed after a tire blew out

We regret to pass on to you that a Firefighter from Hoyt, Kansas (north of Topeka) was killed in the Line of Duty yesterday when the tanker he was driving crashed.

2 Firefighters were taking a tanker truck to the Jackson County Fair Parade around 1700 hours when a tire blew out for an unknown reason near 166th Road.

The truck crossed the median from the northbound to the southbound lanes and rolled a couple times, ending up in the west ditch. The tanker actually separated from the rest of the truck.

The driver of the fire truck, 47-year-old veteran Firefighter Michael Schultz of Hoyt, was killed. 36-year-old Firefighter Randy Smith of Mayetta, was taken to the hospital with injuries.
