JEFFERSON COUNTY, Wis. —A West Allis man was critically injured late Wednesday night in a wrong-way, head-on crash between his SUV and a dump truck, officials said.
The 30-year-old driver of the SUV, whose name was not released as of 8 a.m., was taken to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee with injuries that the Wisconsin Department of Transportation said were life-threatening.
The driver of the dump truck, a 55-year-old man from Milwaukee, was not injured.
Officials said the driver of a Kia Soul was driving the wrong way on westbound Interstate 94 near County Road D, just east of Johnson Creek, at about 11:30 p.m., and struck the dump truck in a construction zone.
In a statement, the Wisconsin DOT said both vehicles were on fire when authorities arrived. Firefighters from the Johnson Creek Fire Department were able to put out the fires and pull the driver of the Kia from his vehicle.
The driver was flown by Flight for Life to Froedtert, officials said.
Alcohol is suspected to have been a contributing factor in the crash, the Wisconsin DOT statement said.
The interstate was closed until about 2:15 a.m.
