LIMINGTON, Maine —

A Limington man died Friday when the all-terrain vehicle he was driving struck a rock, causing him to lose control and be thrown from the vehicle, police said.

Austin Pennell, 48, was driving along Cape Road, or Route 117, in Limington on Friday morning when the crash occurred, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office. A preliminary investigation indicates Pennell struck a rock on an embankment, lost control and was thrown from the ATV. Police said he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Pennell was taken to Maine Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead Friday evening. The cause of death has not been determined, but speed and alcohol are not considered factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
