Good Samaritans rescue 7 near Dauphin Island

MOBILE, Ala. – Two good Samaritan vessels rescued seven people from an overturned catamaran south of Dauphin Island, Saturday.

The good Samaritan vessel, Sixth Frau, notified watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Mobile at approximately 11:25 a.m., of an overturned 25-foot catamaran with seven people in the water approximately 17 miles south of Dauphin Island. All seven people were reported to be wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.

The Watchstanders directed the launch of an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans and a 45-foot Response Boat – Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Dauphin Island. The good Samaritans, in a 24-foot Bayliner and a 30-foot Contender, were able to recover the seven individuals and transfer them to the Coast Guard boatcrew, which met them en route to Mobile Bay at 12:12 p.m. The response boat transferred the victims to emergency medical services at the station.

One of the crew was reported unresponsive and was later reported by officials at Providence Hospital to be deceased. There were no other injuries reported.
