Pilot airlifted to hospital after experimental plane crash near Quitman, Texas

JUNE 9, 2015
QUITMAN, TX (KLTV)
A pilot has been injured following a plane crash southeast of Quitman.
The Texas Department of Public Safety says that about 10:30 a.m., troopers responded to a small plane crash southeast of the city of Quitman, near County Road 3230. Preliminary crash information revealed that the pilot of a small single-engine, homebuilt airplane was attempting to land on a private landing strip.

The plane lost altitude due to decreasing winds, causing the wheels to clip the top of a group of trees. The aircraft landed nose first on the ground. DPS says the pilot, identified as Benjamin Kunziker, 64, was airlifted to ETMC hospital in Tyler in stable condition. The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified and will continue the investigation.

According to the FAA, Kunziker broke his arm and leg. He was the only person on board the plane at the time of the crash.
