LANCASTER – A 21-year-old driver died after he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a utility pole late Sunday night in Lancaster, authorities said.

The fatal collision happened around 11:53 p.m. Sunday, June 28, on 20th Street East south of Avenue I, according to Detective Michael Politano of the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station.
“Preliminary information gathered at the scene revealed an adult male driver, and sole occupant of a Honda Accord, was traveling southbound on 20th Street East at a high rate of speed,” Politano stated. “The driver lost control of his vehicle, which collided into [a] street light pole.”

“Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in this collision,” Politano added.

The pole was knocked over and live wires prevented Los Angeles County firefighters from removing the man from his car until Southern California Edison workers arrived to cut power to the wires and take the pole off the car, according to Lt. Derrick Alfred of the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was a 21-year-old Hispanic male, but his name has not yet been released pending next of kin notification, coroner’s officials said Monday morning.
