At about 3 p.m., Saturday Grosse Point Dispatch notified the Coast Guard about two people in the water after their 14-foot pleasure craft capsized off of Windmill Point.
One of the individuals swam to the break wall and was assisted out of the water by police officers on scene. A rescue crew aboard a 24-foot special purpose craft from Coast Guard Station Belle Isle located the other person and pulled him out of the water and transferred him to emergency medical services waiting at Windmill Point Marina.
A commercial salvage company was contacted to recover the overturned boat.
The Coast Guard reminds boaters hitting the water this spring to dress for the water temperature and not the air temperature. The air temperature is quickly warming but the water is still barely above freezing.
The Coast Guard reminds all boaters to wear a life jacket and ensure that it fits properly. In times of emergency, every second counts. Chances are, you won’t have time to look for and don your life jacket in times of emergencies.
