Traffic on southbound Interstate 17 was moving again at
Indian School Road on Monday morning after a multi-vehicle crash in which two
vehicles caught fire and backed up traffic for five miles.
The Arizona Department of Transportation said all lanes of
I-17 were open again shortly after 6 a.m.
The closure extended from Bethany Home Road south to Indian
School Road and backed up southbound traffic to Northern Avenue.
Motorists were allowed to get back on southbound I-17 at
Indian School Road.
A Department of Public Safety spokesman said a vehicle had
broken down on the inside wall of I-17 and was hit by another vehicle.
Two people in the broken down car fled the scene and were
being sought by DPS officers.
No injuries were reported.
