SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. — Volunteer firefighters from the Kingston and Union fire districts put out a fire at Modine Manufacturing, 604 Liberty Lane, on Wednesday morning, Kingston Fire Chief Nathan Barrington said Wednesday afternoon.

The fire was confined to a laser cutting machine, which Barrington described as about the size of a school bus. He said the machine’s 14 filters, each about 3 feet high and 18 inches across, collect metal dust. “They were all on fire.”

Workers noticed the machine smoking, he said, and pulled the alarm around 8 a.m. Wednesday. About 30 volunteer firefighters responded, he said. Firefighters put out the fire using only about 50 to 100 gallons of water and left the plant  after about 90 minutes.
No one was injured, Barrington said.
