Tuesday afternoon at about 3:30 p.m., an employee of DFW Landfill was run over and killed. According to police radio traffic and other sources, the employee was struck by a customer in a pickup truck hauling a trailer-load of materials to be dumped.
We are told that employees there performed CPR, but were unable to resuscitate him.
The incident occurred in the waste dumping area.
Waste Management closed the landfill while police were on-site investigating. Radio traffic indicates that police took statements from everyone who was in the area at the time.
We are told the closure lasted at least a few hours. Garbage trucks were re-routed to other landfills during the closure.
Update – 9/7/2016 – 8:30 a.m.: Waste Management spokesperson Greta Calvery said that the company was cooperating with Lewisville police in the investigation, and that she would not be able to provide details while the investigation was ongoing. She said that a company HR representative and a market director notified the family of the victim yesterday.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family,” said Calvery.
Update – 9/7/2016 – 8:59 a.m.: The Tarrant County Medical Examiner has identified the victim as Emilio Dodd, 55, of Fort Worth.
Update – 9/7/2016 – 9:20 a.m.: Lewisville Police Captain Mike Moore characterized the death as a pure accident, and said that the department had completed its investigation. Moore said that no charges would be filed. He said that a resident with an F-350 pickup and dual-axle gooseneck trailer had brought in a load of demolition debris to dump, and that Dodd was directing the driver as he backed the trailer up.
Moore said that somehow in the process, a handle protruding from the trailer became entangled in Dodd’s clothing, causing Dodd to be pulled down. The 9,000 pound trailer drove over Dodd’s chest. The driver realized what had happened and stopped to help.
Dodd was pronounced dead at the scene from the severe injuries.
Moore noted that police confirmed that the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration had been notified of the accident.
