Gas leak: Workers evacuated from Chevron’s Gorgon gas project on Barrow Island

WORKERS at Chevron’s $US54 billion Gorgon gas project on WA’s Barrow Island have been evacuated and work stopped due to a gas leak, the CFMEU claims.

WA state secretary Mick Buchan warned of a highly volatile situation due to a gas leak in a pipe at the acid gas removal unit.

“Gas leaks like this could have the potential to be highly dangerous as what happened on Varanus Island in 2008,” Mr Buchan said.

“They are reports that workers on the island were not initially told of the gas leak as they were asked to step down and demobilise.

“Our concern is for the safety of all workers. Chevron and the chief operator CBI should

make it clear what the current situation is and what evacuation steps are in place if the situation becomes volatile.”

A Chevron Australia spokesman confirmed a “minor gas leak” occurred at the LNG plant and there were no injuries.

“Chevron’s primary concern is always the health and safety of personnel,” he said.

“As part of standard operating procedure, Chevron’s incident management procedures were activated and we have notified the relevant authorities.

“Chevron remains on track to load the second cargo of Gorgon LNG in the coming days.”
