The massive hailstorm that struck San Antonio and Bexar County in April will be the costliest in Texas history, according to a state insurance corporation.

The total damage caused by the April 12 storm is expected to total $1.36 billion, according to the Insurance Council of Texas. That includes $560 million in damage to vehicles and another $800 million in damage to homes and businesses.

"The storm primarily struck the northwestern portion of Bexar County moving across
northern areas of San Antonio with large hail that was shaped like jagged rocks,” said Robert
Crosby, executive director of the Independent Insurance Agents of San Antonio.

The National Weather Service reported that some hail reached 4 1/2 inches in diameter, damaging roofs and knocking holes through car
windows.

The $1.36 billion total surpasses a hailstorm that struck Fort Worth on May 5, 1995, causing an estimated $1.1 billion in damage.

Uninsured losses from homeowners without residential property insurance and vehicle
owners without comprehensive insurance were also expected to be high.

The insured loss estimates were taken from company projected losses and verifying their percentage of the marketplace, the coucil said.
