Major crane incident in Netherlands

August 3, 2015

Two large cranes have gone over this afternoon in Aphen aan den Rijn, between Rotterdam and Amsterdam in the Netherlands injuring at least 20 people.
The two large All Terrain cranes were tandem lifting the main deck section of the Juliana Bridge - as part of its restoration - into place from a barge in the canal.
As the two cranes slewed towards the rear of the barge the weight shifted causing the barge to list a little on one side, this had an impact on the load position and that caused one of the cranes to tip over rearwards, pulling the bridge deck with it.

The scene shortly after the incident occured

Shortly afterwards, as the deck hit the other crane - and eight or nine axle model - it too went over. Between the two of them and the bridge section, four houses and a restaurant were flattened and reports say that 20 people have injuries of some sort or another. At this point there have been no reports of any fatalities, so one assumes the crane operators have managed to escape with their lives. The emergency services are on site and have yet searched all of the damaged buildings.

At least one of the cranes is owned by local rental company Peinemann but we do not know if its was carrying out the lift, or simply providing the cranes. The event has been captured on video footage.
