CARROLL COUNTY, GEORGIA
No one was hurt when a small plane was forced to land on a Carroll County road Thursday morning.
The Beech 35 aircraft landed at around 8 a.m. on Georgia 100 near Mitchell Road, not far from the Georgia-Alabama border. No cars were on that particular stretch of road at the time.
The pilot, Lewis Barnes, who is from Alabama, said he was flying his son-in-law back home to Acworth after a family vacation in Destin, Fla. He said there was enough fuel to make the trip, but bad weather and a faulty gauge left them with low fuel and nowhere to land.
Traffic control suggested that they land at the Carrollton airport but after several failed attempts, Barnes was forced to find somewhere safe to put the plane down.
The only reported damage to the aircraft was a small dent in its wing.
The FAA is investigating the incident.
