An Amtrak train with passengers aboard smashed into a car
that bypassed the gates at a railroad crossing outside Rochester, N.Y., killing
the driver, according to police.
The young man, described as in his 20s, reportedly avoided
the gates and ignored the flashing lights just before 6 a.m. at a crossing at
King Road in Chili, 11 miles west of Rochester, the Democrat and Chronicle reported.
Deputies told the newspaper that the man, working for the
town of Chili, apparently was late to work, bypassed a car in front of him and
skirted the gates to get there faster. The train barreled into the car at 76
miles per hour, leaving the driver dead.
The crossing gates were working with the arms down and
cautionary lights activated, deputies said.
The train hit the back side of the car, spun it around with
the car doing at least one somersault, Sgt. Robert Murphy said. The crash took
out the back seats of the car and a part of the undercarriage as well as one of
the gates and crossing signal, he said.
The passenger train, No. 280, was running the Empire Service
route from Niagara Falls to Penn Station with 21 passengers and four crew
members aboard. None were reported injured, an Amtrak spokesman said.
Slow down young people.
You are risking your precious life by playing Russian roulette with
trains and other risky activities. He
could have stayed an hour or so later at his work to make up the lost time, if
that was the case. No excuse. When you get older you will realize that
getting involved in risky behavior does not worth it at all.
