WEST COLUMBIA, SC (WLTX)

Lexington County deputies say a small private airplane, a BR Legend Turbine Legend, crashed into a pond off Old Barnwell Road in Lexington County on Saturday Morning.

Major John Allard with the Lexington Sheriff's Department says the aircraft went down into a pond near the Pine Grove Sports Complex. The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed the aircraft is an Experimental BR Legend.

The FAA says the aircraft took off from Runway 11 of Columbia Metropolitan Airport at 9:20 a.m. on its way to Asheville, North Carolina. Shortly after takeoff, the pilot reported a mechanical problem, and the plane was on its way back to the airport when it went down.

The fate of the pilot is not known. Local investigators could also not confirm if there were any other passengers on the plane.

There will be road closures on Old Barnwell Road at both ends of Collumwood Circle due to the investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board is on its way to the scene and will lead the probe.
