LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA

Two men were killed and another person was seriously injured after a hit-and-run driver plowed into a group of pedestrians during a possible street race early Thursday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The driver of a Ford Mustang lost control of the vehicle around 2:15 a.m. and struck three pedestrians who were standing on a sidewalk outside a business park in the 21400 block of Plummer Street, police officials said.

A man in his 20s died at the scene, while a second man in his 20s was pronounced dead at a hospital in Northridge, according to LAPD Capt. John McMahon.

A third person was hospitalized in serious but stable condition, according to McMahon.

None of their identities have been released.

The driver of the Mustang fled, who was apparently racing at least one other car when the collision occurred, fled the scene, according to police.

LAPD was looking into the possibility that the Mustang was involved in a race when the crash occurred. McMahon said tire marks left on the roadway near the crash site were consistent with street racing.

According to LAPD Detective Bill Bustos, the marks appeared “to be fresh.”
He added that street racing was a problem in the area.

“There’s some areas in the San Fernando Valley … that unfortunately some individuals choose to drive fast, putting the public in danger,” Bustos said during an early morning news conference.

More than a dozen people were believed to be at the scene at the time the pedestrians were struck.

Investigators were checking nearby businesses and buildings to see if any surveillance video captured the hit-and-run.
