Pedestrian dies after being struck by truck on service road; driver charged with driving while impaired (DWI)

JAMES CITY, North Carolina.  A 72-year-old New Bern man was killed Saturday night after he was struck by a vehicle in the James City area of Craven County.

David McKeon Sr. was struck by a truck at about 6 p.m. as he attempted to cross the service road between U.S. 70 and the area of the Diamond Club/Ruby Tuesday. McKeon was trying to get to U.S. 70 where another wreck had occurred.

N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper N.C. Stoneroad said McKeon knew the people who were involved in a two-vehicle wreck in the westbound lane of U.S. 70 and he was trying to get to the shoulder of U.S. 70.

As he began to cross the service road, a truck driven by Gregory Williams, 40, of New Bern, struck McKeon, Stoneroad said. Williams’ vehicle was traveling east on the service road.

Another state trooper was already on the scene investigating the two-vehicle wreck on U.S. 70, Stoneroad said.

McKeon was transported to CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern where he was pronounced dead.

Williams was charged with Driving While Impaired, but the investigation is still under way, according to the Highway Patrol.
