UTICA, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A man has died after he fell from a cell tower in Utica Monday morning.

Hinds County Coroner Sharon Steward identified the man as 34-year-old Melvin Ronnie Nelson Jr. of Foley Alabama.

According to Major Pete Luke with the Hinds County Sheriff's Office, the call came into dispatch just before 10:00 a.m. Monday.

"The tower was being erected just off Highway 27 near Bear Creek Road in Utica," said Luke. "Investigators are working to determine the cause of the accident. We know that there were at least two other men were working with the victim when the accident occurred. No other injuries were reported."

UTICA, Miss. (AP) — A worker has died after falling from a cell phone tower in central Mississippi.


Hinds County Sheriff's Major Pete Luke tells local media that the man fell before 10 a.m. Monday. The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of family members.


Luke says the tower was being erected off Mississippi 27 near Utica, in southwestern Hinds County.


At least two other men were working on the tower when the man fell. No one was else was reported as injured.

It wasn't immediately clear how far the man fell.





Foley, Alabama Melvin Ronnie Nelson, Jr., age 34, a resident of Foley, AL, passed away Monday, April 2, 2018. Melvin was an avid outdoorsman, devoted husband, father and son. He is survived by his wife, Teri Nelson, son; Wesley James Nelson, daughter; Clara Elyse Nelson all of Foley, AL, mother; Elisa Taylor Ramstack (Roger) of Kennesaw, GA, father; Melvin Ronnie Nelson, Sr., (Mitzy) of Fairhope, AL, two brothers; William Shane Starr (Randi) of Summerdale, AL, Michael B. Nelson of Fairhope, two sisters; Tricia Nelson of Fairhope, AL, Sarah Elizabeth Ramstack of Kennesaw, GA, Aunts, Uncles, other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be held from Robertsdale Assembly of God Church, Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 1:00pm. The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 11:00am until service time. Interment will follow in Brooke Cedron Cemetery.
