Drunk & reckless driver Keith Hayes, 28, charged with vehicular assault, reckless driving and DWI after he plowed into a construction site, and slammed into a worker on Staten Island breaking both of the worker legs









GRANT CITY, Staten Island (WABC) --

A car veered off the road, plowed into a construction site, and slammed into a worker on Staten Island early Saturday..

It happened at about 12:40 a.m. on Hylan Boulevard and Midland Avenue in the Grant City section.

The car, driven by a suspected drunk driver, went out of control and into a ditch. It landed on its side, under ground.

Equipment used by the workers to install water mains was used to lift the vehicle out of the ditch.

The 37-year-old worker who was struck suffered two broken legs and was taken to Staten Island University Hospital.

The driver, 28-year-old Keith Hayes, was not seriously injured and is in custody. He is charged with vehicular assault, reckless driving and DWI.

Hylan Boulevard was closed in both directions between Midland and Seaview Avenues for the police investigation.

A drunken driver struck a construction worker in Staten Island then flipped his out-of-control car sideways into a trench early Saturday, cops said.

Keith Hayes, 28, was making a right turn from Midland Ave. onto Hylan Blvd. in Midland Beach when he blew past a series of construction cones and a flag man and barreled into a construction site about 12:50 a.m., police said.

His black 2015 Nissan Altima struck a 37-year-old worker before falling sideways into a ditch where workers were repairing a water main.

 
Medics rushed the struck construction worker to Staten Island University Hospital with two broken legs.

The wasted wheelman blew a 0.163 — twice the legal limit — on a Breathalyzer test at the scene, according to cops. Hayes, who lives in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, was charged with drunk driving, vehicular assault and reckless endangerment.
